Is is really worth your time to pay $1.00 to visit the Whaling and Sealing Museum in South Dildo?
A few years back, a vistit from Captain Morrissey Johnson inspired the citizens of South Dildo to build a whaling and sealing Museum. Committee member Ruby George said, "The citizens were right for it because they thought it would be a marvellous way to teach their children local history and to help to explain to tourists that Newfoundlanders aren't barbarians. The main objective for opening the museum is to educate people about our history and to give people knowledge of the different kinds of whales . In the sealing display, the clubbing area was very important;it showd a very humane way of killing seals.
Currently the Museum is displaying a 50mm harpoon gun and different kinds of whale bones, such as ears, teeth, ribs, and baleen. The have carvings of whales and the utensils which were used in the processing of meat. Besides this, they have pictures and newspaper clippings set up for visitors to read.
They are hoping with the support of local citizens, to have a whale sculpture and carvings, a continous playing movie of moving whales, and a gift shop . Plans are also in place to landscape the property .
One of the main features they are working on is a twenty five foot high wooden humpback whale.
The museum now contains a gift shop that is stocked with local merchandise such as whale carvings, souveniers, etc...
This is the Whale Sculpture that was Donated to
South Dildo by the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador.
